Bernard Cleo Pete Chapman

Bernard Cleo Pete Chapman passed away May 18, 2014. Pete was born in Mount Morris, MI on March 27, 1926 to Joseph and Teresa (Braley) Chapman. He entered the Navy at the age of 17 and served in the Pacific during World War II. After his navel career, he joined the Coast Guard, and was stationed in Toledo, OH on the Tupelo. After leaving the Coast Guard in 1953 he joined the Toledo Fire Department on September 1, 1953 and retired on April 18, 1979. Pete retired as District Chief, a promotion he received in 1971. He had been promoted to Lieutenant in 1961 and Captain in 1967. His assignments were stations 25, 15, 21, 1, 5, 10, and 4. After his retirement they moved to Northern Michigan, where they lived until 2008 when they returned to Toledo. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid golfer. During his lifetime he traveled to every state except for Maine and Alaska. Pete was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Arden during WWII, William Hugh, Ed, and Jack. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 64 years, Shirley (Breitner) Chapman; daughter, Linda Coon; sons, Paul (Melody) Chapman, Dale Chapman, and Kevin (Peggy) Chapman; grandchildren, Renėe Myers, Nanci Moseley, Brent (Tammy) Throne, Ben Chapman, Bridgette Chapman, and Cory (Val) Chapman; great-grandchildren, Michael, Taylor, Brittani, Jarod, Damien, Haleigh, Caleb, Nathan, Bryce, Adam, and Grace. Family will be accepting guests Saturday, June 7th at 10am at Firefighters Local 92, at the corner of Erie and Washington, where a Last Alarm Service will be held at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are given to Senior Independence Hospice or the Toledo Firefighters Museum.
