Barbara V. Franklin (Slappery), also known as “One Line Granny”, was born on March 29, 1946, in Toledo, OH, to the late Robert and Hattie Slappery. She passed away peacefully on October 2, 2023, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo, OH, at the age of 77.
Barbara's educational journey began at Gunckel Elementary in Toledo, OH. She later graduated from Libbey High School in 1964 but considered herself a proud Bulldog. As the saying goes “Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog.” Attending from 1960 – 1963, she had a strong affiliation and love for Scott High School. Barbara continued her education at the University of Toledo, where she pursued data entry and transcription.
Barbara's professional career spanned decades. She made a significant impact as the Lead Transcriptionist at North Coast Behavioral Health Hospital. She dedicated her life to her children and work until her retirement in 2008.
Barbara had a vibrant personality and was known for her wit, humor, and feistiness. She had a sweet soul and a contagious laugh that could brighten any room. In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed going to the library, arts and crafts, playing Ms. Pac-Man, indulging in comedy & good movies, and being a grandmother. Barbara possessed perfect penmanship and had a love for reading, crossword puzzles, and dancing. She also had a unique way of expressing herself and was known for her signature gesture of giving you the middle finger followed by a burst of laughter and a flash of her big, bright smile. No matter her location, whenever Bruno Mars's song “Uptown Funk” would play, she would immediately stop what she was doing to “drop it like it was hot” LOL. Barbara could dance all night and would happily complain, the next day, about how bad her knees hurt but that never deterred her from being the first person on the dance floor at any event. She had a zest for life and embraced every moment with one-liner jokes and laughter.
Barbara was preceded in death by both of her parents, Robert and Hattie Slappery, of Toledo, OH; granddaughter, Saniqua Hightower Tiggs, of Toledo, OH. She is survived by her loving children, daughter, Elise Franklin, and son, Edward Tiggs, both residing in Toledo, OH. Barbara was a beloved grandmother to Anthony Franklin, Daewon Tiggs, Keshawn Walker, and Allira Hampton, as well as a cherished great-grandmother to Roshan Rogers, Ashi Franklin, Khalil Edwards and Jaxon Wirkula. She held a special place in her heart for her dear friends, June Dansford and Gloria McNairy.
Barbara will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her legacy as a witty, funny hard-working, dedicated mother and grandmother will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
