Altoise C. Guy of Toledo, Ohio passed away in Toledo, Ohio on January 20, 2022. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Joseph and Edna Chennault. Altoise graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta Georgia where she met her husband Dr. Frederick T. Guy, Jr., DDS who was a student attending Morehouse College also in Atlanta, Georgia. While at Spelman College Altoise was crowned Morehouse College’s Miss Maroon and White who is symbolic of the ideal counterpart of the Morehouse man. Altoise was also member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. After graduation from Spelman College she attended Atlanta University where she earned her Master’s degree in Education. Altoise and her husband Fred moved to Toledo, Ohio in the early 1960’s and was a prominent elementary school teacher within the community for forty years. She was a member of The Girl Friends, Inc. one of the oldest social organizations of African American women in the United States. Altoise was also a lecture in the College of Library Science at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor during the early 1970’s. Altoise felt strongly about service to the community and was a passionate supporter for what was known as the Lucas County Board of Mental Retardation and later the Ann Grady Center. She was also as staunch advocate for abandoned and abused animals. She was affectionately known as Grandma at the Toledo Animal Rescue shelter in Toledo, Ohio. Altoise will be remembered by all that knew her as a very loving and giving person. She is survived by her two sons, Frederick T. Guy, III also known as Chip and Alan Guy. She was preceded in death by her adopted daughter, Shelly Guy and her husband, Fred. Interment will be at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta Georgia. The family requests that any tributes or contributions be directed to the Anne Grady Center of Toledo and Toledo Animal Rescue.
