Alfredo “Freddie” Perez de Tagle died peacefully from complications of COVID-19 surrounded by his family on January 3, 2021, in Maumee, Ohio, and to the tune of his recording of “Till There Was You.” He was 67 years old. He was grateful for the support and encouragement from friends, family and the numerous groups he was involved with, and he was extremely thankful for the treatment he received at St. Luke’s Hospital from a medical team who worked tirelessly to treat this powerful and unpredictable disease. Freddie was born July 24, 1953, in Manila, Philippines, to Emmanuel Perez de Tagle and Rainelda “Nellie” Sabando. He attended La Salle Green Hills & La Salle Lipa for high school and the University of the Philippines for college. He would eventually move to Toledo, Ohio, after marrying Priscilla Parpana in 1979. Freddie was a jack of all trades and wore many different hats throughout his life. From restaurant manager, Church Cantor, Scoutmaster and even Auxiliary Police Officer, the common thread was working with people. Freddie was a longtime and active member of the St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Parish. While at St. Pat’s, He was able to share his many talents, including his voice. Fred’s voice has led the St. Pat’s community in mass for over 30 years. His vocal accomplishments led him to being a featured soloist for the Toledo Symphony Orchestra Christmas Concerts as well as being invited to join the Central Catholic High School Alumni Choir, a school which he did not attend, as well as the Toledo Choral Society. While at St. Pat’s, He was not only involved with the church but he also chose to send his sons and along with his oldest son Jonathan; joined Troop 252 and the Boy Scouts of America. With the Troop he was able to share his beautiful voice by waking camp with “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin,” from the musical Oklahoma. He wore many hats, literally and figuratively. A sartorialist and fashion-enthusiast, an interest he shared with his youngest son, Eryc, Freddie was always dressed to the nines, donning fitted jackets, colorful bowties and slick shoes everywhere he went, no matter the occasion. He owned a variety of headgear—fedoras, panamas, newsboy caps, berets, even an Australian Outback hat—to expertly complement his outfits. It was often one of the first things people noticed about him, along with his great smile and genial spirit. Freddie was a proud Lolo (grandfather) to Penelope (6) and Nico (5) Perez de Tagle. He was always there to lend a helping hand in their care, from teaching them songs, to going on summer walks and showering them with sweet treats. Freddie lived his life in acts of kindness. He didn’t know a stranger and we are losing so much not having him with us. He was your forever friend. A loyal, inquisitive, generous, kind, proud and loving individual who will be dearly missed by the many lives he was fortunate enough to bless. He was a devoted husband to Priscilla Parpana Perez de Tagle for 41 years, raising two children. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nellie, and father, Emmanuel. He is survived by his wife; his sons, Jonathan and Eryc; daughter-in-law, Angela Katafiasz; grandchildren, Penelope and Nico; as well as his sister, Petita Virata (Cerefino); and numerous nieces and nephews. Due to the pandemic, a private memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 20 at 11 a.m. EST, but will be live streamed online for all to virtually attend.
