Obituary for Louise Schmidt

Louise Schmidt died peacefully on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the age of 95. She was born on July 10, 1923 in London, KY, the fourth of five children of Louis & Sally Parsley. Educated in a one-room schoolhouse with her oldest brother as her teacher, Louise moved to Tennessee after high school to attend nursing school. In 1945, she earned an R.N. degree from Knoxville General Hospital School of Nursing, where she was a member of the U.S. Public Health Service Cadet Nurse Corps. Louise began her 44-year career in nursing at The Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, an accomplishment that she was very proud of. Louise did home nursing care at night for over ten years while her boys were young. In 1969, she took a position at The Toledo Hospital, where she became a charge nurse on 5-South, a med-surg unit. Louise retired from The Toledo Hospital in 1989 after 20 years of dedicated service.

Louise and her first husband, John Metting, raised two sons, Dave and Mike. The family settled in Toledo in 1959, and both boys graduated from Rogers High School and Bowling Green State University. Louise married her second husband, Henry “Hank” Schmidt, in 1976. In 1987, they moved to Perrysburg, where Louise would spend the next 31 years. After Hank’s death in 1988 and her subsequent retirement, Louise became even more active in the lives of her local grandchildren, Megan & Patrick. They, along with their parents and spouses, would later reverse roles with Louise, caring for her in the autumn and winter seasons of her life.

Louise was a very proud grandma of 5 grandchildren. In the last decade, she was also blessed with 14 great-grandchildren; the four in Ohio affectionately called her “GG.” Left to cherish Louise’s memory are her sons, Michael (Patricia) Metting of Perrysburg and David (Pamela) Metting of Canandaigua, NY; grandchildren, Megan (Mark) McClain and their two children of Avon, OH, Patrick (Holly) Metting and their two children of Perrysburg, Todd Metting of Canandaigua, NY, Kurt (Katie) Metting and their two children of Broadlands, VA, and Alicia (Josh) Dougherty and their eight children of Pittsford, NY. Louise is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Louise’s compassionate caregivers in the Memory Care Unit at The Landings of Oregon, where she resided since April, as well as the staff of Southern Care Hospice of Toledo, who provided end-of-life care, the staff and her friends at Waterford at Levis Commons, where she lived the previous 18 months, and her neighbors, companions, and the Wood County Committee on Aging meal preparation and deliverers, all of whom helped us let her live independently in her home at Stone Gate Villas until she was 93.

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39.
