Obituary for Gene Rock Monroe

Gene Rock Monroe, age 82, met his Heavenly Father on Fri, Jan 18, 2019. Born Harold Eugene Monroe, in Richwood, OH on Feb 2, 1936, to Russell and Margaret (Rusty) Monroe, Gene was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Judy; brother, Bill; father and mother; and in-laws, George Pope, Betty Pope, and Cleda Pope. He leaves to treasure his memory his brother Larry (Susan) Monroe; daughters, Alison Monroe and Lisa (Keith) Morrison; grandchildren Kirah, Josh, and Chloe Morrison; former wife, Patricia Williamson; fishing buddy, James Carter; and many relatives, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

Gene graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1954, holding a longstanding cross country record of 10:20 in the 2-mile run. He served in the US Army, then earned his BS from OSU and his MSW from U of M, leading to a lifelong career in social work. Gene and his wife, Judy, were foster parents for a time in Lansing and St John’s, MI. They moved to Toledo in 1975, where Gene worked as a Supervisor for Monroe County Dept Human Services until retirement. Gene loved fishing, bowling, golf, studying his Bible, playing with his grandkids, and being the neighborhood handyman. His dedication to these interests, and in advocating for those in need, regardless of age, race, or other differences, lives on in his family and friends.

Gene is a man whose presence truly made the world a better place, and his family extends their thanks to all who were a part of his life. He would ask us not to mourn too long, but to realize he is Home now, and that “It’ll be ok”. A memorial service will be held in June at Oak Openings Metropark. Meanwhile, his memory can be honored with a donation to Friends of Lucas County Children’s Services (friendsoflccs.org/membership), or simply by doing a good deed for your neighbor.
